Artist's Comments

I was looking for a good building to make an RTS fantasy-style model from, so, sifting through my watch list, I found one that would do just right from ~EpicMyst and asked her if it was okay.

Many days later, with some slight alterations, and after getting pushed out of the way several times by other projects, it is finished!

Be sure to check out her gallery and original submission: [link]

One 256^2 map with alpha, full illumination, 536 tris, Maya

Edit: Never tell yourself that you're done with something when you've been awake for over 20 hours - I got up today and realized that the front stairs weren't textured. Fixed.

It's good, but truth to be told, there's something I don't get - the texture looks a lot smoother flat, than it does in/on the render...how come? :confused:

that's great! Awesome job.

The texture square is the entire map at 1:1 size, with 1 pixel for every pixel on the screen; the model has that same data wrapped on it for the texture, but the model is still about the same size as the entire texture square, meaning the texture pixels (texels) must be blown up.

To put it easier; look at the size of the front of the building in the texture, and then look at the size of the building on the model. I hope that makes sense.

I...think I got it :) Thanks for the explanation; I myself deal mostly with (tiling) huge texture maps for D|S and it's hardly noticiable there, then :)

Yeah, I could apply filtering to it to smooth things out, but when you deal with texture maps this size, it just becomes a blurry mess and looks awful. I don't mind the big texels, either - it reminds me of pixel art. (:
:iconhellwolve:
Good points, good points :) And I suppose the small size is all part of the challenge, eh?

Yeah, I really have a blast with low poly work; much more so than "next gen" stuff. I really don't derive much, if any, entertainment out of high poly work.

While on the subject...Do you make a living out of this kind of thing, too? I never quite caught that through the descriptions of your Deviations and your Journals ^^;
